The first plan is a guess

About Home Care in Sunrise

Nobody can tell from one conversation what a household will need. We stopped pretending otherwise and built the first month around finding out instead.

A small agency that distrusts its own first plan

Non-medical home care across central and western Broward: washing and dressing, moving about the house safely, cooking, keeping the rooms in order, and company. Private pay, charged by the hour.

The standard way to begin is an assessment visit. Somebody comes for ninety minutes, writes a care plan, and a schedule starts on Monday. It is efficient and it is mostly fiction, because a house on assessment day behaves nothing like a house on an ordinary Thursday in February.

So the first month here is deliberately different. Week one is small and watchful. Weeks two and three move things around as the notes show what the mornings are actually like. At week four the plan gets rewritten from twenty-odd visits rather than from one conversation, and that rewrite always names something that did not work.

It is a slower start and an awkward one to sell. It also means that by week five a family is committing to something that has been tested rather than something that was imagined.

How a name gets chosen

Four considerations settle a name before anybody is proposed, and availability is the last of them.

01

Manner before paperwork

Identical training produces very different people once they are standing in somebody's hallway. Pace, talkativeness and patience are what a household lives alongside.

02

The length of the drive

Mileage damages punctuality long before it produces an outright missed visit. The nearest available person is looked at first, which is why the coverage map follows the staff rather than the reverse.

03

Whether they can hold the hours

Somebody dependable at seven in the morning, five days in a row, is not the same person as somebody suited to one long afternoon a week.

04

The cover name, settled early

A substitute is chosen alongside the main aide and introduced in the same way, so holidays and illness never arrive as an unannounced stranger.

Ask what the first month would involve

Not a quotation for care in the abstract — four weeks in this house, how small week one would be, and the figure attached to it.

Commit at week five, not week one

By then there is something real to commit to, which is the whole argument.
