Paying to be told what is happening
There is almost always a long period in which a household obviously needs watching and will accept no physical help of any kind. These hours exist for exactly that period, and a first month spent watching is what they are best at.
What the money actually buys is a dependable weekly account of how somebody is, written by a level-headed outsider, on terms the person at the centre of it will put up with. The talk is real and also, from this end, incidental.
Which is why the match counts for more here than anywhere else on the list. A bad fit survives a shower. It does not survive an obliged hour of conversation every Thursday.
Companion hours are often bolted onto an existing visit rather than bought alone — an extra half hour so the aide can sit down instead of leaving the second the washing-up is finished.
Where nothing physical is needed yet, one visit a week makes a perfectly sensible first month.

Ordinary company, with whatever light job fits around the edges.
A conversation with a past
Resumed from last week, which only works when the same face keeps turning up.
Sitting down to eat
Two plates at once. Cooking a meal and watching it finished are not the same achievement.
A reason to leave the house
Round the block, to the shop, out for coffee. Modest, and it gives a shapeless week a marker.
Whatever was already theirs
The borders, the puzzle, cards, a programme that is never missed. Nothing imported off a timetable.
Small jobs in passing
A tea towel picked up, the post opened, a bulb changed. Incidental to being present.
Watched and written
Appetite, temper, steadiness on the feet, and the state of the rooms.
Outside these hours
- Washing, showering, dressing

- Taking any of somebody's weight on the move
- Medicines of every description
- Clinical work of any kind
- Any journey by car
